I just want to mark this day somewhere. Today might be my last exam day ever. In my lifetime. This is kinda huge. This is historical. Well, maybe not. But at least for me it feels a bit important. I sorta starting to like this whole school thing, when the only responsibility you have in your life is to learn. How convenient is that?

Now I’m starting to feel a bit sad.. and scared..

Due to the number of courses and the number of professors per course and the number of homeworks and assignments that we have, we need to install quite a lot of different libraries and tools. Sometimes, the homework itself needs only 2-3 hours of work, but the installation of the libraries and tools that we need requires days of googling and trial and error.

So, in case I will need to install some of these stuff again in the future, I’ll put up this page to save myself from wasting several days to find the method that works.

Perhaps it was the charm of my latest idol Maïa Vidal, or the sense of “having a life” after grueling days of classes and assignments. Whatever it was, I love last night’s concert of Maïa Vidal (she’s sooo angelic in person), and I’m loving this small concert venue La [2] de Apolo. The place is so small that you can’t expect to find any famous band to play there. The crowd would suffocate to death otherwise. But this is exactly the best part of the venue, you’ll feel close to the artists (though technically you are close to them, distance-wise), and you would really get to focus on enjoying their music, not some fancy decoration and fireworks show on stage. Looking forward to discovering new charmers in this place.

Yes, for me, because the main reason I do this is to make my own one-stop-snippets-center when I’m doing my long queue of homeworks that I reaalllyy hope will end soon.

This is a very nice little jazz club located in the center of Barcelona, near the famous Las Ramblas. It is in fact very small that none of the instruments needed any microphone or speaker or anything to pump up their volume. The atmosphere was very friendly, it almost felt like everybody know each other. wait. I think they really do know each other. Except for me, of course. But I can still feel the warmth… even though I don’t know anyone and I don’t understand their language.

Music quality? You judge:

Oh, and they have other performances as well (not just jazz). Check out their website. But the place is a bit hidden, so I suggest you bring with you a fully-charged cellphone with internet connection and a gps application. Or maybe a Catalan/Spanish dictionary to ask for directions. And I don’t suggest girls to go alone, be in a group of 3, at least. Or bring a man. Or dress up like one if you really have to.

Barcelona: getting a place to stay

First problem of moving to Barcelona is finding a place to stay. Unlike Paris with their CROUS, CIUP, and different residences for students, the government doesn’t really provide any special student residences. In addition, there’s also no CAF for students. In short, I needed to go to the internet and look for housing advertisements, and the housing prices are expensive (same as Paris without CAF subsidy). In the end, I couldn’t rent a place via internet from Indonesia or Paris. I needed to go Barcelona first to rent because (1) I don’t know if the place is as good as what the picture shows (2) the ad might be a scam to get money from unsuspecting foreigners (3) I wanna make sure that the neighborhood’s not a scary neighborhood.

In case you need to move here someday, here are some suggestions on where to find an accomodation:

www.bcn-housing-students.com : speak english, can book online via money transfer, trusted
www.suitelife.com : this is actually where i got my appt from, speak english, trusted, quick response, nice people, they even do viewings on weekends!
www.loquo.com : many options, good only if you’re speaking spanish/catalan, or if you wanna rent only a room with other english speaking student who are renting rooms in their flats, but be careful for scams

As mentioned, I got my place from suitelife. I stayed in hotels for several days while looking for the place. I sent out close to 100 emails (exaggerated), and got very few satisfying responses. The best responder was suitelife. Another one is the owner of a flat I found in loquo, very nice couple (grandparents), speak very very little English, but very very hospitable, they even took me on a tour around the neighborhood + Montjuic (due to communication issue, I didn’t know where he’s taking me until I got there). They’re so nice that I prayed they wouldn’t hate me for choosing another apartment.

Life has become much too serious lately

pause, take a break…..
go to the beach, do nothing but eat bananas lol

something came up during the last couple of days, and even though i wasn’t at the beach, my room felt like the beach with the sun and sand just outside my window, and i have been doing nothing, and i was eating bananas all the time… it wasn’t great, but at least it reminded me to pause… stop and smell the flowers… talking bout flowers, it’s spring time welcome……

They sell English books, both new and used.
The place is rustic & comfy at the same time. They have books all over the place, on the table, on the floor, on the stairs, on the walls. They have seats where you can sit down and read. They have piano for you to play and entertain other guests. They have a typing hut, where you can write your next bestsellers. They even have a bed for you to sleep afterwards. *never really tried to to that, but u can try ;p

An American diner serving American food with 50s American style decoration.
I’m not much of a foodie, so I will not say whether or not the burger is great or anything. I’d just say that the food tasted like food.
Their main menu are burgers. I ordered something called long island bagel, which is bagel with turkey and stuff. I thought the turkey would be bbq-ed or something, like burger king’s. I was wrong, it was just cold slices of turkey as they would put in any sandwiches here in Paris. A bit disappointed by that, but fortunately it still tasted good.
As for the drinks, they have milkshakes, and you are allowed to be experimental about this, order any kind of milkshakes, from nutella to baileys, or even a mixture of them. I tried butterscotch milkshake, it was good

Maybe for a girls day out, since the place is pretty cute with it’s pink and baby blue/turquoise colors.

Once in a while, for the milkshakes, and maybe desserts (they looked good, we were too full to even try them).
